Please follow the instruction below:

  1. watch the video
  2. review the video
  3. review the recount text

Okay, let's start. Please watch the video. This video is a conversation between two friends related to experience.

After watching the video, now try to answer these questions:
You can ask me through the group if you have any difficulties.

  1. When did Iren go to Magelang?
  2. What did Iren do in Punthuk Kendil?
  3. Where did Iren go after visiting Borobudur?
  4. How was the scenery of Telomoyo Mountain?
  5. How was the writer's opinion about the trip?
Some of you can share your answers in our group.

The video is an example of recount.
  • The dialog uses past tense. "we came to Punthuk Kendil; I took a lot of pictures; we visited Telomoyo Mountain."
  • The dialog use specific signal words. They show the events in chronological time.  "First, we came to....; Then, we visited....; After that, we went to ...."

Do you like telling stories to others?

Sometimes, sharing experience to others can help us to enrich each other's life.

So, here's the next question.
How can we tell our experience to others?

We can use recount text

My friend will explain about it. Check it out:

Now, please read one story from my experience in Bali last year.
My precious experience
Does it sound interesting? Hopefully.
I tried to share my experience using recount text.

In short, recount text is a text we can use to share our past experiences. It consists of three main structures (orientation, sequence of events and reorientation)

Look at my text again.

It uses past tense. We can notice it from the verbs that are used (look at the words in yellow highlights) and the to be (the blue highlights).

The first part is orientation. As you can see, it introduces the writer ('I' as the writer) and the highlights of the experience (where and when).

Recount text (especially in the second part: sequence of events) is written chronologically, from time to time. It makes it easier for the readers to follow the story. The transitional words such as 'after that', 'next' and 'then' help to make the story run smooth.

Now, let's move to the last part, reorientation.

This part is no less important. It concludes the experience that we share. It usually uses particular adjectives to support our impression. Referring to my text, I used the word 'tired', 'pleased', and 'unforgettable'.

So, can you conclude? How did I feel about visiting GWK? 👩

Okay. I think that's all I can tell you about recount text. If you have any questions, feel free to discuss with me through chat in our group.

Now, to check your understanding, I challenge you to do this set of exercise. These are all about recount texts.

Have fun with it.
