English Grade VIII - Saturday, 11 April 2020

Hello guys,
How are you today?
I hope that you are happy, healthy and excited to learn from there.
I miss you around the school, anyway.

Today we are going to discuss about SHORT MESSAGE

Please prepare:
your note book, pen or pencil, a dictionary

Here's what we are going to do today:

  1. Watch the video about short message here
  2. Read the information on my page here
  3. Do vocabulary search
  4. Do the exercise
  5. Finish the lesson
Should you have any questions, you can contact me through Whatsapp Group discussion.

OK! Let's start. Please watch this video.

So, that's some explanation about short message. I think you are familiar with that. When we cannot meet each other face to face, we can send messages through many platforms we have, such as WhatsApp, SMS, Direct Message, Inbox or else.

Are you familiar with these abbreviations? Sometimes we use them in our message, right?

Short message is a functional text. We can learn more about its purpose from this picture.

Briefly, there are three parts of a short message:
  1. receiver
  2. content
  3. sender
Now, please take your note and do this vocabulary search. You will find the words on the exercise later. Write them down on your book
Now, it's time for you to do the exercise. You have enough time, so do it carefully. Don't rush.
You can do it here or  CLICK HERE

Wish you all the best. See you soon.

Do you like telling stories to others?

Sometimes, sharing experience to others can help us to enrich each other's life.

So, here's the next question.
How can we tell our experience to others?

We can use recount text

My friend will explain about it. Check it out:

Now, please read one story from my experience in Bali last year.
My precious experience
Does it sound interesting? Hopefully.
I tried to share my experience using recount text.

In short, recount text is a text we can use to share our past experiences. It consists of three main structures (orientation, sequence of events and reorientation)

Look at my text again.

It uses past tense. We can notice it from the verbs that are used (look at the words in yellow highlights) and the to be (the blue highlights).

The first part is orientation. As you can see, it introduces the writer ('I' as the writer) and the highlights of the experience (where and when).

Recount text (especially in the second part: sequence of events) is written chronologically, from time to time. It makes it easier for the readers to follow the story. The transitional words such as 'after that', 'next' and 'then' help to make the story run smooth.

Now, let's move to the last part, reorientation.

This part is no less important. It concludes the experience that we share. It usually uses particular adjectives to support our impression. Referring to my text, I used the word 'tired', 'pleased', and 'unforgettable'.

So, can you conclude? How did I feel about visiting GWK? 👩

Okay. I think that's all I can tell you about recount text. If you have any questions, feel free to discuss with me through chat in our group.

------------------------------------------------

Now, to check your understanding, I challenge you to do this set of exercise. These are all about recount texts.

Have fun with it.

Something is happening right now.

Hello everyone,
welcome back to my page.

Do you know what does a journalist do? Yes, they usually report some news to the audience or listeners. I think their job is cool. Maybe some of you are interested to be a journalist later when you grow up, aren't you?

When the journalists report a live event in English, they will use present continous tense. So, we will learn about it through this post.

I will tell you briefly about present continous tense through this video. I recorded it few months ago. Check it out.

In short, here are some key points of present continous tense:

  • Present continous tense is used to describe condition which is happening at the moment of speaking.
  • The word like now, at the moment, at present, this time are the signal words commonly found in present continous text.
  • These are the structures for the sentence formation:

Formation
Example
Positive
Subject + is/am/are + v1 + ing.
I am creating a blog post.
She is cooking dinner.
They are playing outside.
Negative
Subject + is/am/are + not + v1 + ing.
I am not typing an email.
He is not teaching about simple past.
We are not going to the market together.
Interrogative
Is/am/are + subject + v1 + ing?
Are you waiting for me?
Is she calling the doctor?
Am I doing the right thing?

Here I attach some work by my previous students related to the use of present continous tense. They are reporting about one big event in our school, SMPN 2 Salatiga. Look at their work.

I think their work is great. It looks like a live report on the spot. Don't you want to give it a try? It is fun. Trust me. 👩

Now, it's time for you to practice. Are you ready? Please take a moment to fill in the worksheet. I'm waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Ms. Ratnana

How can we share our experience?

Hello everyone!

Do you like telling stories to others?

People say that experience is the best teacher. The more we experience things the more we learn. Unfortunately, we are limited by time and chances. Sometimes, sharing experience to others can help us to enrich each other's life.
