Procedure Text: Manual

Hello everyone,

So happy to meet you again. I hope you are happy, healthy and ready to study.

This morning you are expected to learn more about another kind of procedure text, MANUAL.

Do you know what manual is?

From the examples, can you now define what's manual?

Before we learn more about it, let's take a look at our material last week. Do you still remember?

What's a procedure text?

Procedure text is a text that is designed to describe how something is achieved through a sequence of actions or steps. It explains how people perform different processes in a sequence of steps. 

Teks prosedur adalah teks yang didisain untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana sesuatu dicapai melalui langkah-langkah tertentu. 

The most popular kinds of procedure text are recipe (resep) and manual. 

Back to the question: What is manual?

Manual is a text that shows how to operate or use an appliance, a tool, or a machine properly.

Teks manual adalah teks yang menunjukkan bagaimana cara mengoperasikan sebuah peralatan atau mesin dengan benar.

What is the generic structure of a procedure text, especially manual?

The generic structure is similar to the one we learnt last week.

1. Title/Goal (Sometimes it is in a form of an introductory paragraph. Biasanya selain judul, berupa paragraf perkenalan tentang apa yang kana dibahas)
2. Materials/Ingredients    (Sometimes in manual, this part is not mentioned or stated directly. Biasanya dalam teks manual, bagian ini tidak disebutkan)
3. Steps/Method (It shows how something is done/achieved step by step. Menunjukkan bagaimana sesuatu dilaksanakan/dicapai langkah demi langkah secara urut)

What are the characteristic of a procedure text, especially manual?

1. It uses imperative sentences (Menggunakan pola kalimat perintah), for examples: plug in, don’t mix, switch off, rinse;
2. It uses action verbs (turn, put, don’t, mix, clean);
3. It uses connectives (kata penghubung) untuk mengurutkan kegiatan, misalnya then, while,  finaly, after that.
4. It uses adverbials (kata keterangan) untuk menyatakan secara rinci waktu, tempat, serta cara yang akurat, misalnya for five minutes, 2 hours, dan sebagainya. 
5. It uses simple present tense.

So, what is actually the social function of the procedure text, especially manual?

It is to tell people how to do or operate something properly. 

Fungsi sosial teks prosedur, terkhusus manual adalah untuk menunjukkan kepada pembaca cara melakukan atau mengoperasikan sesuatu dengan semestinya.

So, that's some explanation about short message. I think you are familiar with that. When we cannot meet each other face to face, we can send messages through many platforms we have, such as WhatsApp, SMS, Direct Message, Inbox or else.

Are you familiar with these abbreviations? Sometimes we use them in our message, right?

 Short message is a functional text. We can learn more about its purpose from this picture.

Briefly, there are three parts of a short message:

1. receiver 
2. content
3. sender

4. How was the scenery of Telomoyo Mountain?
5. How was the writer's opinion about the trip?

Some of you can share your answers in our group.

The video is an example of recount.

• The dialog uses past tense. "we came to Punthuk Kendil; I took a lot of pictures; we visited Telomoyo Mountain."

• The dialog use specific signal words. They show the events in chronological time.  "First, we came to....; Then, we visited....; After that, we went to ...." 

Well, I think you still remember parts of recount text, don't you?
